LINUX: AN ABSOLUTE ALTERNATIVE TO WINDOWS FOR DEVELOPERS AND IN GENERAL

In the midst of vacation, provided to us, especially the students, due to CoVid pandemic, 2020,  was my introductory phase with Linux. It was at the moment, I was introduced to Linux, with the help of one of my close friends Athoye Mahmud, a great alternative to the traditional desktop environment, Windows, which is proprietary to Microsoft.

Linux is basically an open source project, started back in the early 90s by Finnish software engineer Linus Torvalds alongside with the Free Software Foundation.

By open source, it means that its source code is open to all the developers out there. Now this may sound concerning but this is what makes Linux stand out from the traditional desktop environments. Since Linux is distributed under an open source license, it offers:

  1. The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.

  2. The freedom to study how the program works and change it the way you want.

  3. The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.

  4. The freedom to distribute copies of your modified version to others.

Also there are a lot of Distros you can enjoy using Linux such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and many others. It also offers a whole bunch of different mind blowing functionalities for developers.

Now for the general mass, why would they use Linux over Windows? Linode reports, most developers see Linux as a server operating system and are careful to create applications that run in such an environment. It means Linux applications often provide robust security and reliability.

Windows is the most well known desktop environment, but its security is not as good as it should have been. One of the most effective ways Linux secures its system is through privileges. Linux does not grant full administrator or root access to user accounts by default, whereas Windows does. Instead, accounts are lower-level and have no privileges within the wider system. No person in the world would compromise their security over anything, and if it is online, then it goes without saying that anyone would choose Linux over Windows. As for the developers, they are totally free on this platform, to show their invaluable skills.
