Scar: A journey to glory or a matter to conceal?

For those who constantly worry about scars.

On 24th April 2019, around 11:30 pm my body got burnt from chest to stomach (informed only my close people as I don't want to be an object of sympathy for getting burnt and having scars) and I was taken to the burn unit of DMCH (Dhaka Medical College and Hospital). A newly passed doctor was on duty during the third dressing of my burnt area. He saw me and said that my wounds are not healing and also added that everyone wants these areas to be beautiful and spotless indicating my chest area to my stomach area. The words were very catchy to me. My mind was echoed with the following questions. Will the scars make me smaller in front of everyone in society? We can never be beautiful with scars or is it impossible not to be like before with scars? Most importantly, I was devasted as I felt that if a doctor studying at DMCH could say such a thing, then what will be the mentality of the surrounding people?

On another day in DMCH, a young lady came with her mother and her brother and entered with me in the chamber. Entering as soon as possible in the chamber, the first question from the patient party was, "Would the scar of the burn go away?" I was amazed at the fact that they were asking about the scars and stuff but not asking the doctor about the progress of wound healing. They also asked the doctor to prescribe them medicine so that the scar will vanish. I extremely felt disappointed at that moment because the patient herself was more concerned about her scars rather than her progress in healing.

According to me, the scar I got for being burnt is something that I look upon very proudly since it gave me a new identity. Fire is considered to be a sacred object by many so maybe fire gave me an image of an unsanctified society. Be it Ibrahim (A.S.) or Draupadi of Mahabharata, the fire was an inimitable part of their lives. The same goes for my life too. This scar reminds me of the events that I endured to become a more valiant soldier in the battle to be a better person.

Everyone has scars. And there are stories behind these scars. Each scar is a story of inspiration, courage or the most vocal protest against exploitation. Any scar including acid burns, fire burns, postpartum scars and sexual harassment scars tells a story that is bound to inspire our minds. No one can have a slight idea regarding the fact that how much pain a person endures going through the phase of recovering from a burn injury or any injury giving a scar. Scars never make anyone smaller because not everyone can endure what a person has to endure to heal a wound, only the persons having scars can.

Love scars and love yourself. There will always be people to judge us and we will not be bothered by it. Cheers to our scars, cheers to our scarred lives. If anything good happens with a scar then surely a scar is better. We all are beautiful irrespective of gender, caste, creed, weight, height, color, nationality and religion. Love your scars as these depict your liberty and how you emerged victorious by fighting against all odds.
